![]() ![]() I’ve had the unfortunate experience of seeing a pigeon suffer a slow and excruciatingly painful death when I wasn’t told a cat caught a pigeon I had picked up at a good Samaritan’s house. Cats and dogs carry deadly bacteria in their mouths and claws called pasturella. Even a small nick by a cat claw can result in death to a bird. If you have cats, an indoor bird’s cage needs to have narrow bar-spacing to keep paws out. Wherever your birds are housed, their enclosure needs to protect them from the animals that have access to it.To know a pigeon is to love a pigeon, even for dogs. If the bird remains in a closed room and is never exposed to your other pets, it’s natural that their curiosity will make them crazy. I will never trust my dogs or cats 100% if left to their own devices. If I have a bird loose in the house, I don’t leave the room without the bird. If it’s their cage, the dog isn’t allowed to stick their head in the cage or invade that space. This includes when a pigeon is out and they’ve claimed an area (usually high up) that they feel is theirs. Once pigeons know they are safe, their confidence level goes up. A stressed-out pigeon isn’t a happy pigeon. It’s ALWAYS important to make the bird feel secure. Here are some guidelines and ideas that I think are important – Quiet times are especially good for hanging out together as Elizabeth, Jacob and Ruby are here. ![]() (We have found that the health of our birds is much more likely to be threatened by getting out/lost, injuries from other birds, cancer, reproductive disease or worms than by supervised dogs and cats.) Here are recommendations from one of Palomacy’s most expert volunteers, Jill McMurchy. With care, we have been incredibly successful in keeping our foster and adopted birds safe alongside the dogs and cats they share homes with. We have found, with 10 years of experience and more than 800 birds served, that the risk can be managed so that it is very low on the list of threats to our pet birds, provided people take responsibility for protecting the birds. (Please read How to Choose a Cage.) The birds adjust quickly and aren’t much concerned and the majority of dogs and cats settle down and accept the new family members with impressive equanimity. We work with each family on a case by case basis to help them introduce birds to their pets and teach them how to insure their safety. (Stray domestic pigeons and doves are at terrible risk from pets and predators and must be brought into safety!) There is a very real risk involved with what Palomacy calls “blended families”, homes which include birds, cats and/or dogs. Sometimes when Stella's talking I'll say "Make 'em say "Meeeeeeeeeeeeow" and normally she'll meow right after that and I'll go "Me-meow me meow, me-meow me meow, like "Make 'em say ughhhh.na nah na nah." I love having conversations with 's the little things. Many birds, wild, stray and pet, are killed by cats and dogs. Sometimes she'll wake us up in the middle of the night doing this freaky cat call, like a battle cry as she attacks her toys. ![]() Sometimes she'll just open her mouth and nothing comes out, but let me tell you.she has some lungs on her. Sometimes it is so soft you can barely hear it. Izzy (our hairy kitty) has this "sweet-innocent-scratchy-alley cat" meow when you talk to her. She'll do the pigeon/coo when she's up to something or is anxious for us to hurry up and do what it is she wants us to do. She'll meow nonstop and knock things off or do things she's not suppose to when she wants to eat NOW. When she's in another room she wants to make sure we hear her so she meows real loud. ![]() The volume of her meows depends on her mood. Kaotic, that's an amazing story about the human talk! It's so cool how everyone's sphynx/cats communicate with them. They just don't want us to know, but occasionally slip up. We theorized that all cats know how to speak human. he never said anything about the rug again. Later we heard the usuall mom and mama sounds. We said, "What?" He looked at us and repeated himself, "MY RUG!!!" Well we gave it to him.lol He was now standing on his hind legs stroking and rubbing on it. "My rug!!!" We both looked at him, stunned. I didn't know he could run so fast!!! He raced to the dryer and jumped towards the rug while saying. He came racing down the hallway and saw it. Well the dryer was finally done and we thought he would love to have it still warm so we called him. One time my room mate and I swear we heard a human word from him.not once but two times in a row. He usually responed to my questions and comments. My Sphynxs.? Shiva was extremely conversational. he opened his mouth real big and all you heard was " !" What was funny was you could silent meow back at him and he would answer with the same. I have him on video meowing when he was a baby. I used to have a kitty that stopped meowing. ![]()
